HAWK GREEN HOE DOWN CLUB CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

Hawk Green Hoe Down Club met for the first time in October 1982.  The name was chosen partly for its catchy alliteration, and partly to indicate its open and inclusive approach which continues to this day.

At first the club met monthly, and a majority of the members were new to folk dancing, but in quite a short time had moved to weekly Friday nights.  Some of the original members still attend regularly, and the task of calling the dances is now shared between a team of six experienced dancers.

The club has an extensive library of manuals and CDs which cover everything from dances as danced by Jane Austen to modern day Ceilidhs as well as American squares and contra dances.

Country dance is a living tradition, and new material is constantly being produced.  The Club is affiliated to the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

During the 1990 decade the Club ran a regular Folk Festival at “Ridge Danyers” College which only came to an end when alterations to the College made it unsuitable as a venue.

Many bands and callers as well as dance teams both local and National appeared at the Festival which offered a range of folk music and dance opportunities for all ages.

In addition to the Regular Friday Night meetings the Club also runs two public dances each year with visiting bands and callers.  There is a party each bank holiday Saturday as well as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In this our 30th year  the club is putting on various extra celebratory events for club members past and present.

Club membership at the present time stands at around 58, with an even balance of men and women.

New members are always welcome providing they are willing to come regularly and learn the dances and moves, so that they can participate fully in the evenings.  There is always someone willing to help new members through, so if you are interested, please ring the Secretary on 0161 427 4430.  We meet all year round, so people can join at any time.
